That is odd that it drops off so substantially. I would say a good solution would be to try and up your marketing more. If you can link your page, do more SEO then the traffic shouldn't drop so much int he future.
Look at the SEO threads there are a lot of good ideas there. What you're doing is good you should look into blogs/forums and get your link there too. Just don't spam...that is never fun to read!

DEFINATELY make a contract before you give him money. It doesn't matter if you see him or anything. He should know that online deals are always going to cause people to feel a bit risky because people can so easily disapear with your money. I would wait for more contact and a legal contract...
I think that to increase traffic you need to promote your site in the right places. Let people know about it! I think Henry's advice is good...social bookmarking has working for me in the past. There are definately ways to go about it without spending lots.
