Hello All,

I am just wondering how dose these spy tool gather data?

1. How do they know which network is on individual sites?
2. How do they know which keyword is related to display ads?
3. How do they collect list of sites that have different network on them?
4. How do they know which country the ad's was run on (VPN Crawling ?)

Thanks

Okay, here's the deal. We live in the INFORMATION AGE!

This data is available through many sources. API's, some free and some paid. Some rely on various types of scrapers. Some are the result of buying the data directly. Information brokers are the core of this and they are everywhere, under every rock the internet has in it's playground.

Thank you for your response

I can answer this question, we crawl hundreds of thousands of publishers per day collecting their ads.

1. How do they know which network is on individual sites?
You can tell what network a site is using by looking at the sites source code, and seeing which networks javascript/iframe they are including.

2. How do they know which keyword is related to display ads?
We can use factors such as URL keywords, and also the content of the actual landing page. (Think how does Google know?). For banner ads, you can simply check the content of where the banner links to.

3. How do they collect list of sites that have different network on them?
We crawl the web at a huge scale, simply searching for specific footprints in the source code of the pages. There are ways of selecting which targets to crawl which are more likely to include ads though; by optimizing our scrapers/crawlers; much like optimizing your campaigns :).

4. How do they know which country the ad's was run on (VPN Crawling ?)
We have several thousand IP's/connections available in each country. This is very important for a good spy tool, because if you don't have enough then you can get cloaked very easily. This is an area where most of our competitors fall down.
