Setting up a campaign on Facebook

The very first thing you have to do is to create an advertising account for you at About Advertising on Facebook | Facebook

You can use your personal account or create a new one. An eventual ban porbably wouldn't affect the personal account, and creating a new account won't stop them from linking both accounts, so don't worry too much about this.

After creating the account, click on "Create ad" on the top right and select "send people to your website" as the objective. Supply your destination URL (the direct link to your lander or the link provided by the tracking software).

Here is what to put in the fields:

Custom Audiences
You probably won't have to use this field.

Locations
Put the target country. Never target more than one country per campaign. Create separate campaigns for each country, in case you want t use more than one.

Age
Select an age range. Don't go too broad. If you don't know exactly what age range to target, split-test groups of 10 (e.g. some ads for 20-29, others for 30-39, 40-49, etc).

Gender
Choose males or females. Never target both genders with the same campaign.

Languages
Put the language of the country you're targeting or simply leave empty.

More Demographics
You can specify more advanced things here. Be smart with these options, use things that you believe will help you reach a more targeted audience. For example, if you're promoting an online game and you want to target people who are more likely to be geeks, use IT related stuff in the "fields of study" (stereotypes are not 100% accurate, but can be helpful for most campaigns). Just be careful not to make your audience too small.

Interests
Supply your interests. You can start with the ones that come to your mind and then use Facebook's suggestions to grow the list. If you want a better list of interests, create it with audience insights before setting up the campaign.

Behaviors
Same as the "more demographics" filed. The interests will allow you to target the fans of something. For example, you can target the fans of a soccer team. However, if your offer is a better fit for people who like a certain team and play soccer, you may try to use the behavior to reach only people who practice sports.

Connections
You probably won't need to use this field.

Budget
Choose daily and then set how much you want to spend per day. For testing campaigns I usually recommend a low daily budget, something between $10 and $20.

Schedule
Set to run continuously.

Bidding
Choose "optimize for clicks".

Pricing
Choose "manual bidding" and bid something close to the high-end of what Facebook suggests. It will help you achieve high CTR with the ads fast, because you will get better impressions. Once the CTR is high, Facebook will automatically lower your CPC.

Ad Set Name
This is the name of your ad group. Put anything here, it's just for your reference.

After this you just have to upload your images and set up your ads.

Don't forget to remove mobile news feed if your campaign isn't mobile optimized!

For creating new ads in the future, just go to your campaign, then to the ad group and click on one of the ads. After this, just click the "create similar ad" button and you won't have to go through the entire process again.
