How are you guys handling WordPress 404 Error pages?

I customize mine to let them know the link didn't seem to go to their desired page and give them instructions to help find the page with the onsite search function.

    I also
rotate ads on them with products that fit the core site niche.

Do you guys have any other suggestions that can improve on my 404's?

I normally use funny image or quote like
"Hey dude which are you looking for was deleted by my cat mistakenly and I couldn't able to recover :("

I must say this is the superb idea to give your visitors a little entertainment. I'll definitely apply this technique to my website as well.
