Have any affiliates tried buying paid reviews to advertise their affiliate links? Creative affiliates may want to test out this idea. Success would depend on the CTR and conversion rates of course, but I would think some well placed reviews could possibly work better than Adwords in some cases. If you got 100 visitors from a $10 review, heck that's only 10c per visit, plus you'd get the PR benefit if you were smart and sent the link to a pre-sell landing page on your site, instead of sending the link juice direct to the merchant.
Here are a few of the pay per post or get paid to review sites that are out there. It may be worth checking out their inventory to see if they have some reasonably priced blogs with decent PR in your niche. <a target="_new" href="http://www.reviewme.com/">ReviewMe</a> - From the folks at Text-Link-Ads (*a 5 Star client), <a target="_new" href="http://www.sponsoredreviews.com/">SponsoredReviews.com</a>
and of course the infamous <a target="_new" href="http://www.payperpost.com">PayPerPost.com</a>.

One of the advertisers at Sponsored Reviews is offering up to $10 for your review of a website hosting/building program. The twist – the advertiser does not own the site – she is just the affiliate and asks you to use her affiliate link in the review."</blockquote>
