Adblockers are growing...

Hello guys,

I just saw this thread on the Dutch news site called nu.nl

link

Adblock Plus has more than 60 miljoen montly active users and is still growing, according to Ben Williams the German developer of Adblock Plus.

Adblock Plus blocks most ads, but state advertisements that as developer EYEO sees as "acceptable" The Company defines as a sort of middle ground , but there is much criticism of this structure as large advertising companies have to pay their ads to make it visible for Adblock Plus users.

I think when more people are going to use adblockers the more dangerous it will be in the advertising business.

The publishers and ad networks brought this upon themselves. They abused people's computers and browsing experience with pop up ads back in the late 90's which resulted in all the major browsers coming with built in pop up blockers. They didn't learn their lessons from that, and continued to make more intrusive ads which pop up over top of the content of the page and become an even bigger nuisance, so now more and more people are using ad blockers. It's as simple as that. I've tried turning off my ad blocker from time to time when I need to check out some competitors ads or make sure my own ads are showing up, and my browsing experience is absolutely miserable. Just about every single site has a ton of pop up layers overlaying the actual content, nagging me to sign up for newsletters or go "like" them on Facebook, or Tweet about them, it's nuts.

I'm really irritated at how cocky and obnoxious some of these site owners are becoming with regards to this as well. They act like they're entitled to bombard us with a shitty user experience and a boat load of ads in exchange for viewing their sites. They ought to be thankful they have an audience of visitors at all - and perhaps the only thing keeping people from abandoning their sites all together is that Ad Block plugin they are using. A visitor with Ad Block running is better than no visitors at all. If they want to piss off people using Ad Block, then perhaps we should all just move on and not go to their sites at all anymore, and they can crap themselves when they see their overall traffic drop substantially.

I pay for my internet connection, and I pay for my computer and/or mobile devices. It's my business if I don't want to waste my data plans downloading stupid ads and especially auto playing video ads. It's my business if I want to block ad networks from tracking the crap out of me with all their cookies and fingerprints, not to mention the recurring issues where malware has been getting spread via these ads - even Google has been hit with this issue. I want to maintain my privacy and keep my computer clean from all that adware junk shit, that's my business, not any given publishers. They're not paying my bills.

Yes, you are particulary right. But we still have native advertising and it's not blocking by AdBlock Plus(for example taboola and outbrain aren't blocked by AdBlock Plus because they provide "useful" ads)

Great post! I agree.

I like to believe that our industry is (and will be) smarter an stronger than a bunch of adblocker plugins:

We just will find ways to deal with adblockers and to keep cashing even with its proliferation. And people must understand that nothing is free. If they don't want to pay they have to deal with advertisements.

ad blockers are helpful in many browsers but they are not compatible with some sites.....they create many issues with the sites the administrator of the ad blockers should solve this problem and if i deactive them then anonymous adds which i don't like.... i don't know why it is if anyone of you know please tell me and also tell me hoe to resolve this issue becuase its time wasting adds are so bad that i get annoyed sometimes and angry and it finishes the quality if sites.

@K.Hoogje......... that is seriously a shocking news as the person pays alot in making and advertising ads if this situation persists then they have to pay to adblocker also and a huge amount so that there ads can be easily visible on the sites or the Microsoft will find out the way to handle this type of situation in new browser.. it is really dangerous for the advertisment company as the adblocker stops the script from running the ads on the website......

@karenhuston you can block taboola and outbrain by going in the adblock options or if you right click with your mouse you can block any element on a website (cough cough, including annoying notifications you can see on some forums where they ask you to put an avatar even if you don't want to have one )

Well if you need a solution for adblock, go to pornorio.com (adult so be 18 :) with adblock and afterwards hit me up for the solution.

I installed adblock just to test that website. And, surprise: even with adblock activated, the ads are all there! How do they can bypass adblock plugin and still show all ads?

I was surprised when the first ad showed up through AdBlock Plus. Found out you can even block the "acceptable" ads.

I need the adblock because I don't have cable and stream all my TV. Wow, is there ever A LOT of spammy ads that go along with that!!

how could taboola and outbrain disturb so much?
why should anybody block them?

Adblock can be circumvented in many ways. Same reason why some WP plugins can tell if you are using Adblock, and display a message in place of the ad asking you to disable adblock.

That sometimes happen dear.... but what is the way out.. if we unblock the adblocker or disable it we will start again for the ads that are annoying to see and some of them are adultry ads that a small child need not to see but they are there and displaying what would one do at that time??

A lot of publishers are now blocking users that are using adblock. A pretty famous german publisher (I think you'd have to search for it) stopped users with adblock from accessing it's content.. I think this will be the norm in the future.

Legitimate publishers have a right to draw a line and say that they at least need the opportunity to monetize their audiences or they will no longer have the $$ to do proper journalism.
