I love squidoo, not only can you make your own lenses and get traffic and great links that way but you can aldo add links to other peoples lenses. It's great!
You can use something like google keyword tool or any other keyword generating tool to have a look at top keywords in your niche and then incorporate them into good articles that interest the audience.
SEO is all about getting people to your sites, I think that is the biggest challenge in all of this, getting traffic and not just any traffic but traffic that converts into sales. I think you have to just keep plugging away with linkbuilding and writing good content and trying different things...
As I am quickly finding out as I get deeper into this whole affiliate marketing SEO world, it is all about hard work! Nothing is for free and I totally agree with you in that no Ebook is going to give you the magic key to success.
I second what jcorkern says, it is a true method to get digg working for you, the only thing is that you have to have loads of patience as this takes a lot of time to develop but it pays off in the end.

I am quite new at all this and have started out in a similar fashion to you. For me it is the best way I can do this at the moment. I do like to have a quality site with lots of content and in order to add more affiliates I first like to see how the site is growing. I do use adsense right off...
