Focus and commitment are definately two keys to success in internet marketing. My advice is to try and specialise in one particular method rather than trying to 'do everything'. It is very easy to get distracted in this business so focussing is the key.

You will find that niche market research is always free. Once you determine that your niche has low competition and "may" be profitable you can then start testing out various strategies and products which is where you may need to invest some money - dont forget there are always free options at...

To answer your second question, The $/sale is the actual amount of cash you receive for the sale whilst %/sale is the percentage of the product price that the merchant is willing to pay (i.e the $/sale).
Im assuming the product you're looking at is around $27?
I think one of the key things you need to do is try and stay focussed. Yes there are a ton of different niches and methods you can use to enter those niches but you are not going to get anywhere running around trying to do a hundred different things.
