What is ranking?

I don't really understand all this stuff about website ranking. Can someone explain it more? To be honest, I don't even know what it is or how to use it.

PPC Question

I have google adsense on my site and I was told I couldn't use ppc sites to promote my site. Is that correct or am I misunderstanding.? :confused:
