own product - tracker vs ga

Hello, not an affiliate. I have a product and wanted to use GA for funnel tracking but an affiliate friend of mine told me that UTM tracking is not precise enough and that i should as an affiliate click tracker to track my funnel. Is that really true? How is that the case? Thanks for your help!
