Well, there are a lot of different ways that you can promote your website and the best ways will depend on the niche / topic of your website.
If you can share the niche of your website, that will be a big help to get better targeted responses instead of the basic replies.

Well it might be that "James Smith" is an extremely common name and there are a lot of people named that. So if one of them does something against the forum's rules and they get banned then you won't be able to use that id (in most cases).
Find an ID that is unique to you and isn't something...
If you are looking for long term and sustained traffic for your website, blog, landing page or whatever then SEO will be the best option IMO. If you need an instant burst of traffic then PPC would be best.
The thing is that SEO won't cost you money, only time if you know how and can do it...

Several years ago I was using Gmail and noticed my conversions, interactions, responses were going down consistently. I switched back then and now I use Something@MyDomain.com and everything got better.
I prefer to use email addresses from my own domain also because IMO it looks more...
