    Does the 'Dash' make a difference ?

    I think it help the user to remember your URL if you have a long one..... in your example I would remember hotbanana-icecream more than hotbananaicecream as the longness of it has been taken away ;)

    I would definately agree with Linda too..... you want to keep your site as clean looking as possible so I would go with niche forums and blogs to build your backlinks ;)
